1972 saw the start of “truck bed” production in the U.S. for in-country automobiles thanks to a deal with Atlas (now TABC).  Toyota acquired this “Atlas Fabricators” in 1974, and renamed it as “Long Beach Fabricators,” marking the company’s initial manufacturing venture in the United States. Long Beach Fabricators was renamed “Toyota Motor Manufacturing, U.S.A. Inc.” (TMM) in 1980. This “TMM” was renamed “Toyota Auto Body, Inc.” (TABC) in 1986. Later in the same year 1986, Toyota’s “Kentucky, US” assembly factory was named by the TMM moniker.

In “Torrance, California,” Toyota Motor Credit Corporation (TMCC) was founded by TMS in 1982.

In 1984, in order to manufacture automobiles in the United States, Toyota and GM established “New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc.” (NUMMI) in “Freemont, California.” Also, “Toyota Industrial Truck, U.S.A.” joins with TMS. TMS won the EPA “WasteWise” award in 2014 for the fourth year in a row. At its sales and logistics centers around the nation, TMS has eliminated or minimized the “materials waste” since 2009. 

For the fifth year in a row in 2012, TMS achieved a perfect score of 100 on the “Corporate Equality Index” (CEI).

All of the activities in North America, including “R&D, manufacturing, marketing, sales, after-sales care, and corporate functions,” have been operating under “Toyota Motor North America (TMNA)” since 2017 as part of the “One Toyota” program. All the operations are operating from new headquarters in “Plano, Texas.”

In 2018 in “Huntsville, Alabama,” Toyota and Mazda begin construction on a new production plant, forming “Mazda Toyota Manufacturing, U.S.A., Inc.” (MTM), their joint venture. Also, in “Ottawa Lake, Michigan,” the Toyota Research Institute (TRI) inaugurated a 60-acre test facility to further automated car technology.
