210 Area Code
As the region’s population grew, additional area codes, like “830 and 956,” were introduced to accommodate the increasing demand for phone numbers. When the ‘210 area code’ was split in 1997, the San Antonio metropolitan area (which is the “core” area) continued to use the ‘210 area code’ (under the planning letter PL-035). The ‘830 area code’ was assigned to all or part of 34 counties of the northern region, including ‘the cities of Uvalde, New Braunfels, Fredericksburg, and Kerrville.’ The ‘956 area code’ was assigned to seven-county areas of the southern region, including ‘the cities of Laredo, Brownsville, and McAllen.’
‘210 area code’ is classified as ‘enclave area code’ because it is geographically completely surrounded by the ‘830 area code.’
On “July 20, 2016,” the “Public Utility Commission of Texas” (PUCT) approved an all-services overlay as the relief method for ‘210 area code’ (as part of Project No. 45224). The “all-services overlay” means that a new ‘726 area code’ will cover the same geographic area as the existing ones. Furthermore, once all assignable “prefixes” in the ‘210’ NPA have been assigned, then the 726 NPA’s prefixes will be available for assignment.
As the general rule is when there are no more three-digit “prefixes” available in the current area code, a new area code is added to the relevant geographic area.
Smaller “Numbering Plan Areas” (NPAs) within the NANP’s service region are designated by three-digit NPA codes, often known as area codes. NANP stands for “North American Numbering Plan Administrator.” There are 792 “prefixes” that can be used to service a specific geographic area; each prefix has 10,000 numbers. The three-digit number that appears between the ‘area code’ and the four-digit line number is called a “prefix” (NXX). NXX code is also known as an exchange, prefix, or a ‘Central Office (CO) code.’
Currently, there are 799 “prefixes” in ‘210 area code’ including reserve ones. Some “prefixes” are reserved for special purposes and are not assignable to standard customer numbers.
At present, the ‘210 area code’ covers the greater San Antonio area including “all or portions” of “the cities of Alamo Heights, Balcones Heights, Castle Hills, Cibolo, Converse, China Grove, Elmendorf, Fair Oaks Ranch, Garden Ridge, Grey Forest, Helotes, Hill Country Village, Hollywood Park, Kirby, Leon Valley, Live Oak, Olmos Park, Saint Hedwig, Schertz, Selma, Shavano Park, Terrell Hills, Universal City, Von Ormy, and Windcrest” located in the counties of ‘Atascosa, Bexar, Comal, Guadalupe, Medina, and Wilson.’

‘Home NPA’ means within the same NPA (or ‘area code’). ‘Foreign NPA’ means NPA other than ‘Home NPA’ |
There are about 7.91 million ‘general’ usable phone numbers in the ‘210 area code.’ Telecommunications firms received these numbers from the NANPA and are utilizing them. The distribution of ‘total phone numbers’ as of 2019 was as follows: 71.1% Assigned, 2.2% Intermediate (shared by OCNs), 0.4% Reserved (by user for future use), 2.3% Aging (user discontinued the service), 0.6% Administrative, and 23.4% Available. 43 OCNs were in operation in the area as of 2019.
An ‘area code’ that has the identical second and third digits is known as an “Easily Recognizable Code” (ERC). The ERCs (e.g., 888 for toll-free service) denote unique services.
In the US, ‘telephone number administration’ falls under the jurisdiction of the “Federal Communications Commission” (FCC).
