214 Area Code
Smaller “Numbering Plan Areas” (NPAs) within the NANP’s service region are designated by three-digit NPA codes, often known as area codes. NANP stands for “North American Numbering Plan Administrator.” There are 792 “prefixes” that can be used to service a specific geographic area; each prefix has 10,000 numbers. The three-digit number that appears between the ‘area code’ and the four-digit line number is called a “prefix” (NXX). NXX code is also known as an exchange, prefix, or a ‘Central Office (CO) code.’

1+10D stands for “one plus 10 digits.” Calls that result in ‘toll charges’ are known as “toll calls”
***when multiple ‘area codes’ cover the same geographic area, it’s known as an area code “overlay.” Overlay complex refers to multiple “area codes,” delivering resources to a single geographic area
‘Home NPA’ means within the same NPA (or ‘area code’). ‘Foreign NPA’ means NPA other than ‘Home NPA’ |
Currently, there are 788 “prefixes” in ‘214 area code’ including reserve ones. Some “prefixes” are reserved for special purposes and are not assignable to standard customer numbers.
At present, the ‘214 area code’ covers primarily Dallas County including “all or portions” of the counties of ‘Collin, Denton, Ellis, and Rockwall.’
There are about 7.88 million ‘general’ usable phone numbers in the ‘214 area code.’ Telecommunications firms received these numbers from the NANPA and are utilizing them. The distribution of ‘total phone numbers’ as of 2019 was as follows: 67.3% Assigned, 0.6% Intermediate (shared by OCNs), 0.7% Reserved (by user for future use), 1.9% Aging (user discontinued the service), 1.0% Administrative, and 28.6% Available. 49 OCNs were in operation in the area as of 2019.
An ‘area code’ that has the identical second and third digits is known as an “Easily Recognizable Code” (ERC). The ERCs (e.g., 888 for toll-free service) denote unique services.
In the US, ‘telephone number administration’ falls under the jurisdiction of the “Federal Communications Commission” (FCC).

****an “Operating Company Number” (OCN) is a four-digit ‘alphanumeric’ code that serves as a unique means of identifying local telecom service providers. OCN is also referred to as ‘Company Code.’ The “National Exchange Carrier Association” (NECA) assigns OCN, which is also used to report NRUF data. NRUF stands for Numbering Resource Utilization/Forecast
‘d/b/a’ stands for “doing business as.” ‘a/k/a’ stands for “also known as.” ‘s/i/i’ stands for “successor-in-interest.” ‘f/k/a’ stands for “formerly known as”

History -
The ‘214 area code’ was one of the original area codes established in 1947 primarily covering “parts of Dallas County and smaller portions of surrounding counties.” Next, with an increase in population, ‘903 area code’ was created on ‘November 4, 1990,’ as a result of a geographic split from the ‘214 area code.’ The ‘903 area code’ was created by separating the entire northeastern part of the ‘214 area code.’
On “March 8, 1995,” the “Public Utility Commission of Texas” (PUCT) approved an all-services overlay as the relief method for ‘214 area code’ (under the planning letter IL-95/03-002). The “all-services overlay” means that a new ‘972 area code’ will cover the same geographic area as the existing ones. Furthermore, once all assignable “prefixes” in the ‘214’ NPA were assigned, then the 972 NPA’s prefixes became available for assignment.
On “August 5, 1996,” a new plan that called for a geographic separation of the 214 NPA and ‘introduction of the 972 NPA’ was further approved by the PUCT (under the planning letter PL-005) following an overlay relief. Dallas’s center region kept the 214 NPA.
As the general rule is when there are no more three-digit “prefixes” available in the current area code, a new area code is added to the relevant geographic area.
As the region’s population grew, ‘additional’ area codes were introduced to accommodate the increasing demand for phone numbers. In particular, in 1998, the split line between the 214 and 972 NPAs was removed. In 1999, the 469 NPA was added as an ‘overlay’ (under the planning letter PL-142) for the 214 and 972 NPAs.
In project number 48765, the PUCT again authorized an ‘all-services’ distributed overlay on ‘February 27, 2020,’ as a means of relieving the 214/469/972 NPA (under the planning letter PL-537). As with the present 214/469/972 NPA, the new 945 NPA will cover the ‘same’ geographic area.
