626 Area Code

Currently, the “626 area code” serves portions of Southern California’s Los Angeles County and is a ‘telephone area code.’ After being separated from the ‘818 area code’ in 1997, the ‘626 area code’ was established as California’s 16th area code. After being physically divided from the “213 area code” (one of the three original area codes given to California in 1948), the ‘818 area code’ was put into use in 1984.

Eastern Los Angeles County, comprising portions of “Pasadena, Alhambra, LaPuente, El Monte, Covina, Baldwin Park, Azusa, Monrovia, Glendora, and Arcadia,” is covered by the ‘626 area code.’ The Los Angeles-Long Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) includes the ‘626 area code.’

Smaller “Numbering Plan Areas” (NPAs) within the NANP’s service region are designated by three-digit NPA codes, often known as area codes. NANP stands for “North American Numbering Plan Administrator.” There are 792 “prefixes” that can be used to service a specific geographic area; each prefix has 10,000 numbers. The three-digit number that appears between the ‘area code’ and the four-digit line number is called a “prefix” (NXX). NXX code is also known as an exchange, prefix, or a ‘Central Office (CO) code.’

1+10D stands for “one plus 10 digits.” Calls that result in ‘toll charges’ are known as “toll calls”
***when multiple ‘area codes’ cover the same geographic area, it’s known as an area code “overlay”
‘Home NPA’ means within the same NPA (or ‘area code’). ‘Foreign NPA’ means NPA other than ‘Home NPA’

There are about 7.9 million phone numbers in the ‘626 area code.’ Telecommunications firms who receive these numbers from the NANPA can use them. The distribution of ‘total phone numbers’ as of 2019 was as follows: 60.7% Assigned, 1.5% Intermediate (shared by OCNs), 0.5% Reserved (by user for future use), 3.0% Aging (user discontinued the service), 0.8% Administrative, and 33.6% Available. 47 OCNs were in operation in the area as of 2019.

An ‘area code’ that has the identical second and third digits is known as an “Easily Recognizable Code” (ERC). The ERCs (e.g., 888 for toll-free service) denote unique services.

In the US, ‘telephone number administration’ falls under the jurisdiction of the “Federal Communications Commission” (FCC).
