- Tone words
Tone words

Tone words reveal the speaker’s or writer’s “feelings, attitude, or judgment” about the subject he/she is writing or ‘toward the reader.’ The writer’s tone is conveyed with “tone words.” Tone is not fixed; it can shift depending on “the writer’s purpose” or the progression of the content. Writers sometimes use tonal shifts to keep readers emotionally engaged, signaling new “ideas or contrasts.”
When a writer uses specific “tone words,” it shapes the way the reader interprets the message. These words give readers clues about how the writer feels — whether they are ‘happy, sad, angry, excited, sarcastic, or something else.’
Understanding tone requires the reader to actively engage with the text and pay close attention to elements like ‘word choice, details, imagery, and language.’ If a reader misreads the tone, they risk misunderstanding the entire message or intent of the author.
Examples -
“I had just finished my coffee and was staring out the window and the train arrived” (Tone: calm, observational).
“I won the lottery and didn’t even bother to cash the ticket” (Tone: detached, indifferent).
“She left the room and never came back, but I didn’t expect her to” (Tone: accepting, nonchalant).
“I broke the vase because it reminded me of him, and I didn’t regret it” (Tone: resolute, defiant).
“I donated my entire fortune because I thought it might make me happy” (Tone: ironic, regretful).
“That filthy rat. For years, he’s had it coming. I’m happy I had the courage to do it at last” (Tone: revengeful, well-satisfied).
